15.1.2002         David Holt (Starboard/Gaastra) wins Overall South Island Cup.
We appologise for the delay in reporting, but the organizers of this year's Racing Nationals have had too much on the schedule to provide results and info on this years South Island Cup.
Only now have we learnt of David Holt's win at the second round of the South Island Cup which were held a couple of weeks ago at Lake Aviemore. After his previous win in the first round in Dunedin earlier, he is now the Overall Champion of the South Island !! Congratulations. There is one more event this weekend in Christchurch, but with only 2 events counting for the Overall, Davis is the true "David Dunkerbeck" of this years South Island Cup.
Good to see the Wellingtoninan racers doing well and we are looking forward to some good results at the Race Nationals to be held 2.-8. Feb. 2002 in Christchurch.

14.01.03  South Island Cup 2002/2003 report by Mike Sinclair

Round 1, Dunedin 23-24 Nov 2002

Dave Holt was too good again this year and easily won the SI Cup for the second year running. First round was held in Dunedin on the weekend of 23/24 November and 4 course races were held on Saturday in perfect easterly winds which increased during the day with the final race being held in 20+ knot gusts. Dave won all 4 races and even he had to rig down to his 9.8 metre sail for the final race. Terry Alkemade got very close in this race and was Daves' major opposition on the day, finishing second three times. Mike Sinclair got the other 2nd place in race 3 and Gavin Jackson and Mike shared the 3rd place results. Sunday was another windy easterly and an upwind/downwind slalom course was set. This was an interesting course which involved starting at the bottom of the course, racing up to the top mark and then back down through a three buoy downwind slalom course. With the wind blowing around 25 knots everybody chose slalom gear and a big fin was the go for getting up the first leg quickly. Dave won 5 of the 6 races and Mike Sinclair won the other when Dave had an over early start. Mike and Gavin shared the 2nd places followed by Terry Alkemade and Tony Limburg who was sailing one of the new Starboard Hypersonic wide slalom boards. Tony showed some of the potential of these boards in one race by getting to the first upwind mark in 1st place even though he was on an uncambered wave saill. Dave Holt ended up winning the round overall with Mike Sinclair 2nd and Terry Alkemade in 3rd .

Round 2, Christchurch 30 Nov-1 Dec 2002
Round 2 was in Christchurch on the last weekend of November which began with a classic Lyttleton harbour easterly.
Race one was a course race and began on a rising wind which blew most of the field off the water and eventually only 4 competitors finished the course. Dave Holt managed to hang onto his 9.8 metre to win but even he spent some time in the water with the big gusts getting the better of him. Terry Bentjes got close for a while on his 7.4 metre but was then flattened on the downwinder and had to settle for second ahead of Daryl Malloch and Dan Willems. With the wind strength staying up, a downwind slalom course was set for the afternoon and 6 heats were held with 3 consecutive slalom heats making a race score. Dave Holt and Terry Bentjes shared the wins ahead of Mike Sinclair and Terry Alkemade. Sunday was another easterly and the slalom course was set in the Christchurch estuary in anticipation of good wind. The wind didn't co-operate and another 6 races were held in light, gusty conditions which didn't suit small slalom boards and in fact Dave Holt did the final race on his course board with a small fin fitted, not perfect but in the conditions it did the job. Terry Alkemade was the man for the day and kept it planing throught the lulls to win the two rounds overall but wins were shared around with Daryl Malloch, Terry Bentjes and Mike Sinclair winning races also. Again Dave Holt won the round overall with Terry Bentjes 2nd and Terry Alkemade 3rd.

Round 3, Lake Aviemore 2-4 Jan 2003
Round 3 was held at Lake Aviemore on the 2nd January and Aviemore turned it on with perfect course racing conditions and enough wind to keep the older style narrow course boards competitive.
3 Races were held and all on a shortened upwind/downwind course. Dave Holt won again and this time was on the latest Starboard 147 Formula board which looked very fast, particularly downwind and very short also at only 233 cm long. Dave Gould sailed well on an older Underground course board and with some smart sailing tactics he finished 2nd overall and beat Terry Alkemade and Mike Sinclair, who were both on formula boards. Tahitian visitor Jean Luc Saucet had a 3rd and a 5th place using an old borrowed Styrotech 65cm course board and an 8.4 metre sail and he and Dave Gould showed that when the winds stay above 15 knots there is still life in the old smaller course boards. Jean Luc finished 5th equal overall for the round with Steve McEwen and Ned Tamatea both of whom were having their first races on formula boards. No more races were held at Aviemore as the wind didn't begin blowing until later in the evenings for the next two days.

Congratulations on a well deserved S.I cup victory overall for Dave Holt who was in a class of his own for most of the races and the best of luck to him for a good result in the national champs in February 03.
