South Island Cup 2001/2002

A southerly in Dunedin. Not unheard of. In fact quite common, especially for anyone who has raced there in the last 3 years. A dying southerly on the Saturday Dave Holt the opportunity to show how the wide course boards go in light conditions. Dave planed while most of the fleet parked up, the sailors looking forward to the hot showers and beers afterwards in the Vauxhall yacht club.

Sunday was an altogether different story. On Saturday night Gav got excited when he checked the weather forecast on teletext and on Sunday morning the easterly was in with a vengeance. 9 rounds of slalom we raced to make up 3 results. 35 gusting 40 knots. Overrunning the gybe marks 'cause sometimes it was just too scary to turn on them. 4.5 meter sail fully maxed (Dave Holt hanging off a 5.5). Terry Beentjes won the day but a broken boom in the final race put paid to his chances of winning the competition and Dave came out on top.

Aviemore at New Year dished up 2 days of NW conditions forcing a move down the road to Lake Waitaki. The first day we ran 7 slalom races before the wind died and on the second day we ran another 5 races giving 5 results in total. There is a line in the IWA (International Windsurfing Association) race rules which suggests that gybe marks in downwind slalom races should be placed in the surf line where possible. Well we didn't have surf exactly but Waitaki generates some good swells and the two marks on the far side of the course had everyone working hard to make the turns.

Dave Holt showed his consistency here winning 8 of the 12 races. The last day we waited at Aviemore for the chance to run a course race and eventually succeeded with a single upwind downwind race in a SW. Shades of the 2000 Nationals. Dave won with Gav Jackson and Terry Beentjes taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Interestingly Terry on a 3 year old, 70cm board beat Dave to the top mark the first time around and, while Dave won with a 2 minute margin, there wasn't as much in it as we might have expected.

The final round in Christchurch was a little disappointing. No sailors from out of town despite the fact that the venue will be hosting the nationals in a couple of weeks, and awful weather. Southerlies again after 2 weeks of rain. Saturday was cold, wet and not much wind. Sunday was showing clearing conditions and strong SW so we laid a longish course up Lyttelton Harbour into Charteris Bay. An hour later 2 of the 8 starters managed to finish with Terry Beentjes and Chris Dimock showing great fortitude to stay the course. All the competitors had their share of dramatic moments with light winds on the start line and 30 knot gusts at the top mark.

Overall a good competition but a disappointing field. While Dunedin turned out 14 sailors it was only the slalom conditions which pulled in the numbers and few of these sailed the Aviemore and Christchurch rounds. Throughout the competition only 3 sailors were using the newer wide style course boards and this must give some food for thought amongst the retailers within the industry. Thanks to all involved and particularly Dave Holt for making the journey from Wellington for the Dunedin and Aviemore rounds.
