North Island Cup 2000

Clayton Dougan wins North Island Race Cup 2000 overall  in the Open Class !
The overall win in the Formula Freeride category would probably have to go to Matt Steele, whilst Bronwyn Ward according to my calculations got the second place !!!!
Well done all Wellington sailors.  (Auckland results below.)

A report on the event in particular at this stage is not published as to me it seems there is too much politics involved with the racing events these days and it is virtually impossible to get a hold of an independent report as the story differs with each person I speak to.

13.11.2000   SHOWDOWN OF CLAYTON DOUGAN AND PETER JOHN THIS WEEKEND IN AUCKLAND !!! The last round of the cup will take part this weekend in Auckland. Who will win the overall title ? Or will upcoming Woo Norris be able to interfere? We wish Clayton Dougan, Woo Norris and all the other Wellington sailors good luck !  See below for brochure and details, or call Boardriders for details.

North Island Race cup series Tauranga 4./5. November 2000

Finally, I was able to get a hold of the results, sorry for the delay, not an easy task !!!
Congratulations to all the Wellington sailors who made it up to Tauranga last weekend. I believe the weather sucked, but the good thing about racing is you can hold a very decent event in pretty much any weather condition.
Special effort from Bronwyn, who drove all the way up there, and being the only woman competing and actually beating some of the lads. This shows how keen Wellington windsurfers are, and I only hope more sailors will follow the example ! The results show that Peter John and Clayton Dougan are currently the dominators of this cup, and we are all looking forward to a real showdown up in Auckland this weekend !!!! GO CLAYTON !!
The other outstanding sailor, which the results dont really show is our Woo, who is certainly right up there with Peter John and Clayton. He sailed extremely well, showing that his course racing practice and testing in the Ditch has paid off really well. Unfortunately, Woo doesnt really take part in the slalom, which takes him down to overall 7th, however, it would be fair to call him a top three sailor based on course racing.

North Island Race cup series Tauranga 4./5. November 2000

The weather forecast was a good look a couple of days before but Saturday morning arrived with 10 to 15 knots of south easterly breeze and temperatures were hideously cold and it was raining constantly. Course racing was the order of the day with the open fleet racing being dominated by Peter (Arnold) John, Woo Norris and Clayton Dougan. Clayton was the winner of the day as the other 2 pace setters kooked it in the 4th heat by not starting correctly and being disqualified. The Formula Freeride fleet found the cold and variable conditions diffidult with a  slightly less challenging course to the open. Local sailor Andrew Straker ended the day in the lead with consistent top 3 results all day. Bronwyn Ward from Wellington also put in a gutsy performance showing she was used to the sub zero temperatures.
Sunday dawned with the rain still coming down but the temperature was on the up. Things were a little more pleasant and the iwnd was up a little more. After another course race for all the racing moved to slalom with the open and Formula Freeride fleets racing separately again. The wind stayed in at a reasonably steady 20 knots with excellent racing over a figure 8 slalom course. COnditions were excellent and close racing resulted. The form sailos were again Peter John, winning 2 heats, Clayton Dougan winning 1 and a win by Roger Twedell. The ever consistent Luke Watson and Brohn Torckler also stood out.
The final results were close. Only a couple of points separated Peter John and Clayton DOugan, with Peter coming out on top with first place. This sets the scene for an epic battle in the final round in Auckland on November 18. & 19.

North Island Cup Race Series Wellington October 7th & 8th

The first round of the North Island Race Cup took place this weekend in Wellington, and it surely was a great event for everyone taking part in it ! After 8 days of gale force in a row, the wind just backed off enough for the weekend to allow some decent racing. Sunday offered some pretty hardcore slalom conditions in Seatoun where the event was held. The wind ranged from 20-30 knots and produced some serious chop on the outside which made it hard for most to hold on, especially since Roger Twedell, the organiser didnt show mercy by sending the competitors more than 10 times on the racing course. The format was a LeMans all go beachstart, with everyone starting at the same time, only the girls usually getting a bit of a handicap start. This proved to be an awesome way to hold an event, as there was no standing around the beach for anyone, and also the not so professional racers had a chance of being part of it. One heat was especially close with Bronwyn and Simone flying towards the finish line head to head, with Clayton and Jarred desperately trying to catch them. It got incredibly close, and the whole thing basially ended in a photofinish. Racing at its best !!
The course was a simple in/out, with a beachstart, an outside buoy and back to the beach. The pros were flying, and the small shorebreak made a good start incredibly important.

The most consistent sailor would have to be Clayton Dougan, who also won the overall, by winning most races and top placings in pretty much everyone of them. Challenge came from Peter Johns (Arnold) from Auckland and Bron Torckler, who finished second and third overall. A solid performance was also shown by the rest of the Wellington crew, placing 4./5/ and 6th  (Woo Norris , David Holt and Gary Mc Corry).
Woo showed a great effort on the extended final race, being on Claytons heels most of the race, missing the final jybe but still coming in 3rd, using a wavesail during the whole contest.

North Island Cup Race Series Wellington October 7th & 8th

The first round of the North Island Cup was sailed in Wellington over the weekend. The forecast was excellent with tons of wind forecast although with current equipment and a new format, heaps of wind wasn't essential. As it turned out Saturday was as still as could be and only a friendly, drifting race was held. Sunday morning dawned with clouds racing and a stiff Northerly blowing onto the beach at Seatoun. Slalom racing was the order of the day. 12 races of all in slalom were held, using a simple Le Mans beach start and an out & in course with the finish around a buoy just meters off the beach. It was total excitement as over 20 racers in each hurtled round the outside marked and raced back to the beach in winds gusting to 35 knots at times.

Significant performances were put in by Clayton Dougan, fresh back from a season training in Maui, who dominated by winning most of the races and Peter ( Arnold ) John who was always very close behind. Woo Norris 4th and Gary Mc Corry 6th were also notable for their performances using the new DRX wave sails from North.

In the Formula Freeride class it was extremely close with only a few points separating the first 6 place getters. Bronwyn Ward put in stunning performance in the sometimes wild conditions winning one round overall. Simone Hollenstien capped off a great day for the girls racing by coming second and Matt Steele 3rd holding the flag up for the boys.

It was a day of awesome action and fun racing thoroughly enjoyed by the Open class racers as well as the Formula Freeriders. The feed back was unanimous that the simple and easy format made the racing super enjoyable for every one of all abilities and skills.
Every one is eagerly awaiting the next round to held at Mt Mauganui on November 3rd & 4th .
