Day 1, Sunday May 6th
The 2001 Race nationals officially started, unfortunately the wind had disappeared after a very windy Saturday, not providing any racing conditions at all today. The day was spent mostly doing other activities, such as testing the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club beer or visiting the Aquahydro center. There is a keen group of Wellington sailors competing, such as Clayton and Dean Dougan, Gareth Wood, Tony Rule, James Thomas, Rory Hocking, David Holt.
Clayton Dougan and David Holt are expected to do really well this year. Hopefully there will be some wind on Monday to allow for some first results.
Day 2, Monday May 7th
The day started off with no wind once again, the race day was consequently called off at about 13.00 to let everyone enjoy various other Auckland activities such as Wakeboarding etc. As per murphy's law however, the wind filled in after that, providing ~ 12 knots of wind for a time, which allowed for some more gear testing and general blasting around. Hopefully some racing on Tuesday !
Day 3, Tuesday May 8th
Once again, no wind. Racing day was called off at 10.00, and most Auckland competitors went back to work. Amongst the visitors and especially part of the Wellington crew, the casino is becoming quite popular... ! Forecast for Wednesday is for a 30 k NE wind, and looks even better for Thursday and Friday, so hopefully we will be able to post first results here by tomorrow !
Day 4, Wednesday May 9th
The race day starting a bit more promising than the previous days, and the field actually managed to get to the starting line, before the wind totally crapped out. The race day was then cancelled once again after it became clear that it wasnt going to happen today. The forecast looks promising for Thursday with 20 kn + NE and possibly same for Friday/Saturday with wind supposedly shifting more to the north.
Day 5, Thursday May 10th
From one extreme to another ! 50 knots of wind today, totally over the top, I'm sure everyone saw it on Telly. Anyway no competition as guinea pigs on 4.0 wavesails were hammered. Now everyone is hoping for less wind on Friday, and at this stage forecasts look like there might be some whicked slalom racing with 25 kn northerly. Anyway, results are desperately required, as there's only two race days left !!!
Day 6, Friday May 11th
Finally some racing ! Steady 18 knots of wind allowed for 3 course races to be held. The interesting thing was that competition was really tight not allowing for any mistakes. The following race results are not confirmed, it's all we have at the moment unfortunately, but still show who is going well this year. We should receive full results by Sunday !
The Wellington crew seems to be doing very well, with Clayton Dougan potentially taking the overall title if things go well for him tomorrow. Amazing effort also from upcoming Gareth Wood who is possibly looking at a top 5 overall placing once again if things go well tomorrow. The forecast looks good for Saturday, possibly allowing for some more course races !
