North Island Cup6.3.2002 3rd March WWA Freestyle event report (by Leland Le Breton)
This year we actually got some wind for the freestyle event. In fact Saturday it was so windy through the ditch, that after sending out a couple of guinea pigs (who got hammered) the event was postponed to lunchtime Sunday.
Sunday turned out to be much more manageable and the event kicked off at 12.30. Most people sailed on 4.5 to 5.0 sails but it was quite northwest and gusty. About 15-20 people entered and really got stuck into it out on the water. The format was relaxed and simple, everyone went out sailing and for 2 hours the judges (who were also sailing) checked out what people were doing and picked their top 6 sailors.
At 2.30 everyone came in for sausages and coke. The judges selected the 6 for the final which kicked off around 3pm. The finalists were; Lawrence Young, Gary McCorry, Gareth Wood, Chris Norris, Mark Hollenstein and Clayton Dougan.
As the flag went up. everyone blasted off from the beach and just went hard. Loops, volcans and 360's were popping out everywhere, with a mix of other exotic tricks thrown in. Everyone was sailing at such a high standard that choosing final placings was difficult. In fact, so difficult only the top two placings could be awarded with no unanimous decision being reached by the judges for third place.
After the final we moved down to the Greta to annouce the winners and dish out spot prizes from event sponsors, Boardriders, Carbon Art and Wild Winds. So the winners were:
Girls: 1st Carmen Sulzberger
2nd Bronwyn Ward
Boys: 1st Clayton Dougan
2nd Gary McCorry
Thanks again to the sponsors and all those who entered and helped out. The level of sailing from everyone was a huge leap above last year, so keep working on the moves and get ready for next years event.
