North Island Cup22.3.2001 Wellington Freestyle Champs 2001 Even though the wind was light on Saturday, the forecast for Sunday was even lighter. So the contest went ahead in the 8ish knots of breeze. It started around 2pm after our Swiss guinea pig Thomas proved that you could actually grovel about in such little wind - and do it with style might I add.
The event was great, with everyone sailing and watching having a great time. The level of sailing was fantastic and a lot higher than I ever expected for a light wind event. Sail tricks were the order of the day and after a couple of the out-of-towners had shown the range possible moves, everyone seemed to follow suit and raise their game, some even pulling off moves they had never seen before the day.The moves of the day were:
Will Thorp: sailing sitting down on the board then pulling a gybe before standing back up.
Jem Hau: one handed sail 360's.
Gareth Wood: a sail 360 that just kept going, I think he got around 5 times before getting dizzy and having to finish off with a helitack.
Ben Skinner: swan dives off the board, a couple of press-ups and sailing no hands with the harness line around his head (lucky there wasn't a gust or it surely would have been a 10 point headless move!)Two sections were run, serious and not-so-serious. Numbers were a little low but competition level was high, because everyone pushed themselves more than they normally would have. I think everyone tried at least one new move and I am sure everyone who entered got something out of it.
Most people managed to get gear sufficient to sail on, maybe those that managed to get their hands on a course board had an easier time. Thanks to everyone who loaned out their gear to get others sailing, it was really great and in the spirit of the day.
Winners were Jem Hau in the serious heats, Simone Hollenstein in the not-so-serious heats and the Wild Winds and Boardriders spot prizes were dished out at the Lazy Lobster Lounge Bar in Seatoun. Thanks to all those who helped out to make the day so good. Especially Mark H and Nick H for the judging and Paul C for assembling the Rubik's BBQ and cooking up the snarlers. Red Bull for stopping by to pass out their product. Wild Winds and Boardriders for the fantastic spot prizes.
Until next year, in the words of the Euro's
FREESTYLER!
