Tom Taylor reports from the Canaries
19.07.04
Ed - Oh my god ! Tom Taylor, NZL - 19 has won the JP Young guns clinic in the Canary islands and has qualified for the PWA!!! Thru his own determination, and at just 17, Tom has realised a young windsurfers dream winning a clinic where some of the world's best junior freestylers come to learn new moves and compete against each other . As a result of winning Tom has earned an entry to the PWA comp now being held. There will be more to come, on this so stay tuned. . .

The young guns camp is over and the competition was yesterday. I won the competition, (got the kamasutra DVD). Because I won the comp the instructors said I should try to qualify for the pro event. I put my name on the waiting list and there were enough spaces that I got in. Im in the f*@#king PWA pro freestyle event! The event starts tomorrow, I know im not going to do well but I am definitely better than a few of the other competitors. The best thing is by just entering I get PWA points which means I have a better chance of qualifying for future events.

So nervous right now but i'm just going to go out and have a good time and learn heaps. At the least I will sail about eight heats so it is all good. Give you another report later.

Had the final competition today, I won the one we had a week ago but they wont tell us who won until later tonight. I landed a spock, a spock 540 and a one handed spock 540 in the final heat so I hope ive won it. Been killing myself on flakas but getting closer. World cup starts tomorrow, all the pros are here, just ate with Riccardo and sailed with Kauli, Robby Swift, Cheo and Gollito today.

Ed - The first report from Wellington's young punk in the Canary islands, where Tom is currently at the JP young guns clinic.

Heres a quick report on my epic trip so far...

Day 8 I think in windsurfing heaven, sotavento, feurteventura. I don´t really have any idea of time or date because in feurte the locals say there is no time, it is either sun or it is dark, and right now it is dark. I spent three days windsurfing in Whitstable in England (where skinjob grew up Ed - that is Ben Skinner) with team GYRO (Get Your Rat Out), who are the three crazy Brits im living with in Feurte. Got to Feurte and the first three days had very good conditions, 4.4m powered up, some of the pros were ripping, especially tonky frans who was landing perfect planing spock 720s before he went to lanzarote. The next three days were crazy, head high down the line shore break and nuclear winds, most people on 3.3m! Finally yesterday the wind eased a bit and the water flattened off and today I had one of the best windsurf days of my life. Sailing all day in boardshorts, powered up on a 4.4, slightly gusty but dead flat water. Sailed with Bjorn Dunkerbeck who was testing the speed circuit, and Anthony Ruens who landed a perfect no handed flaka in front of me and is only 15! Switch stance seems to be the way forward at the moment with all the pros training switch stance moves. The world cup marquee is just going up so getting ready for some wicked sailing and better parties!

There is nothing else really, just a hotel and a lot of sand. Had a very good mouse chase in the apartment which lasted a good 15 minutes and resulted in a broken glass a broken sofa and the mouse getting away, but Pip got it last night just before it got out the door with a nice side blow. There are still two geckos living behind the fridge.

Thanks Wellington Windsurfing Association, this is awesome!

Tom
