Maui Postcard No 8 - Return to Maui
21.02.05
Hookipa clean up set Antoine Albeau smacking a big lip Antoine sizing up the section Yes, we have returned and lets just say no one was surprised to see us back - 'they say you always come back'.
When we left last year we were adamant that we would not return but rather head straight for Venezuela early 2005 and now we are here, the windsurf fever has gripped us once again and Maui is an exciting place to be for a crazed windsurfing pair such as us - Team Kiwi.
We have had swell (head high - over mast high) and wind (4.2 - 5.3 m) since we arrived two weeks ago and the forecast is for this to pattern to continue indefinately. We were not expecting such great conditions - the surfboard has not even been on the water yet. The conditions couldn't be more different from last year, where the guys got 3 days over Dec/Jan/Feb - stink. Even when we arrived in April 2004, we had a month of windless days before the Trades kicked in.Apparently, the Maui winter prior to our arrival comprised few Kona days and fantastic surf but not much in the way of windsurfing. All the Pro windsurfers are still here and we have been treated to their daredevil jumps, sick loops, sweat-as tricks and their lightning fast wave rides on 'high surf advisory' conditions at Hooks - where currently only the Pros are out.
The North Shore is seemingly airy, with the lack of 'tourists' here. The number of people on the water are a third what you see in the summer so there are ample waves for the picking. It seems that Jaws has ripped twice in the eight weeks that we have been away and we are so hoping that she awakens at least once more so that we can see this infamous monstrous wave firsthand. Whales, whales and more whales - they are everywhere and it gives us warm fuzzies to see so many of them in the warm Maui waters.
Leland is busy with 'Maui Sails' and getting things up and going there - it is interesting times being apart of the team setting-up a new sail brand and company.
Happy sailing everyone.
Aloha, Carmen and Leland.
