Our Maui correspondants report from the windy islands on the Maui Race Series and the performances of our Kiwi sailors
![]()
The 2005 Maui Race series is well over for the year. Kiwi's were again well placed in the racing.
For those of you that don't know how the series works, here is the low down. The course is a downwind "M" slalom course and racing is carried out every fortnight at Kanaha Beach Park. The 4 morning races are split into age groups and the 4 afternoon races are split into ability levels, plus a wave board and a formula class. The formula class is run by Neil Pryde (NP) Maui, where everyone races on identical gear. NP Maui rent you a NP Sabre free-race sail and JP Supercross board. With everyone on the same gear close racing is available to everyone.

Aucklander Peter Johns was the top Kiwi winning the overall Mens 19-35yrs category with fellow Aucklander Jono Squires in 8th overall. Christchurch's Terry Alkemade came 7th in the Mens 40-49 yrs category. The racing was extremely close in all categories. The race series is top level sailing with several hot pro's and race enthusiasts turning up on most days to tune up for the up coming PWA/race season and included, Alex Aguera, Matt Pritchard, Kevin Prtichard, Phil McGain, Mark Nelson, Jimmy Diaz and Peter Volwater.
