Maui Postcard No 1
12.05.04

The first postcard comes from Will Thorp recently returned from a short stay on Maui with well known Wellington sailors Leland and Carmen who are now living on the windy island.

"At the end of 2 months with no wind in Southern California, I was ready for some windsurfing, and Maui was on the way home.  Leland and Carmen had established themselves in Paia and before long an international cell of windsurfers developed: Leland and Carmen, Thierry and Estelle, Cormack, Evan, and myself.

Little did they know it, but these sailors and cameramen were soon to feature in Leland's "Tour de force" home video production from Aeolian Productions".  This opus centred around a day this group spent at a little known windsurf break on the north shore of Maui.  At that fabulous spot, the cameras were close to the action and recorded with unpitying clarity the highs and lows of five energized sailors in some of the most fun sailing conditions your scribe has ever experienced.  Stratospheric backwards and push loops and tweaked aerial re-entries and floaters alternated with shorebreak humiliation, looping over-rotations, and over-the-falls dumpings, all vying for the greatest visual and adrenal impact.

Spectacular surfing and scenery rounded the trip off nicely for me, although who could not be envious of Leland and Carmen who will be there for at least the next 6 months?
