My first time: (windsurfing !?!?!)
I was 12 years old. Was in Picton harbour. I got stuck in the middle of the harbour and I couldnt get back. My dog swam out for me !Best windsurfing experience:
Plimmerton 2 years ago. It was 4.2 weather, everything was perfect. The perfect day !Worst windsurfing experience:
Also in Plimmerton, got stuck upwind on a 3.7 at dusk, so overpowered, I could only get back by swimming in to the firestation and climbing over those sharp rocks. (Thats when you really know you're on your own out there !)What fascinates you the most about windsurfing?
Freedom, no rules, thats nice. How do you see the sport of windsurfing developing in the future ?
It will get easier to learn. What would you like to see happening in the Wellington Windsurfing scene, or what would be a really cool thing to happen ?
It would be great to see more girls out there !Something to say to all other windsurfers out there ?
1.) This is for anyone thinking about getting into windsurfing. People keep saying :"but don't you have to be really strong to pull up the sail ?" This is what stops lots of women from sailing - so say to them that its not all about strength !!
2.) Try stuff !A lot of Bronwyn's sparetime has always revolved around or on the water. She spent a lot of time in boats and yachts before the summer of 1995, when she started to get interested in windsurfing. That year, she spent heaps of time at the Christchurch Eastaury. From there, things progressed rapidly, when she asked a friend to give her some lessons on sailing in footstraps and other basics. Heaps of trips to the southern lakes were consequently committed, and as it happens, all of a sudden she was seriously addicted to windsurfing. Her first overseas windsurfing vacation took her to the famous "Gorge" in the USA, well know for its Hurricane wind force and huge currents. It was there when she realized that sailing in New Zealand is bloody good, as the level of pollution in the Gorge was incredible, the swell was really messy, and generally it wasnt near as good as home. A year later, she decided to give the tropics a go, doing the one thing every windsurfer has to do in his/her lifetime... visit Maui. She really enjoyed that trip, with water temperatures being really nice, and the only bad thing about the trip is, she never really seems to have got used to the "moderate" Wellington temperatures since !!!!!!
These days, Bronwyn can be seen on any decent day in Plimmerton, Lyall Bay, the Ditch or Seatoun, and she is out there, regardless of conditons. Bronwyn is really versatile, she enjoys wavesailing, but has also put a focus on racing, by visiting the first two rounds of the North Island Race Cup 2000 this season. She did really well too, with the effort and enthusiasm she shows, by driving up all the way to Mt. Maunganui racing cup two weeks ago, only to sail in horrible conditions and being the only girl at the event, makes her a good example for all other sailors out there, truly deserving her the title of this months "sailor of the month".
Bronwyn, early days Christchurch Estuary 1996. She's come a long way since !!
